ACT IChaos of War, Currents of Ambition
During the Warring States period of the Eastern Zhou, the state of Ji falls into civil unrest. Commander Ao Shuzheng and Deputy Meng Ting achieve great merit in quelling the rebellion. On their triumphant return, they encounter a mountain ghost who delivers three prophecies: Ao will be promoted to Prime Minister, then King, and Meng's son will eventually ascend the throne.
ACT IIThe Prophecy Fulfilled, Inner Demons Arise
Upon returning to court, Ao is indeed appointed Prime Minister. His wife, hearing the prophecy, is consumed by an insatiable lust for power. When the Duke of Ji stays at their mansion, she manipulates and coerces Ao into murdering him. Framing the guards, Ao declares himself King. To eliminate all threats, he orders the assassination of Meng Ting and his son; Meng is killed, but his son escapes to the state of Yan.
ACT IIIThe Falling Empire of Malice
At his coronation banquet, the guilt-ridden Ao hallucinates the ghost of Meng Ting and reveals his crimes in a panic. Meanwhile, Meng's son leads an army from Yan to the city gates. Besieged by internal and external threats, the Queen collapses into madness, hallucinating blood on her hands that cannot be washed away, and eventually commits suicide.
FINALEThe Fateful End, The Forest Moves
In a state of frenzy, Ao returns to the forest to question the ghost, receiving the assurance that "his throne is secure unless the forest moves." He uses this to boost morale, but the Yan army approaches disguised behind cut tree branches, appearing like a moving forest from afar. Seeing the prophecy come true, Ao's troops desert. Betrayed and surrounded, Ao dies under a hail of arrows, ending his sinful life.
